EN: There is no photo needed to express what's in the mind right now. The expedition is really great. The Vistula river is truly wild and kept its promises of water turbulences, sandbars, beauty and wildlife. I have crossed only one other kayak and less than 10 (tiny) boats going up the river. The weather has been absolutely too sunny so drinking was very important. I'm in the capital city preparing to leave in a few hours for the last 500km or so to Gdansk. The hardest part is yet to come they told me. The river has been quite dry so not so hard to paddle in terms of currents but less water means a slower general river current which means I have to push hard to progress. About 100km further down I'll reach the last 2 dams. In between a massive lake which if the wind enters there can create waves up to 2,5 meters. I seriously hope not to have waves higher than 50 cm and have enough good weather to pass this 30 km stretch. But I'll have far less sandbars as of course from the 2 feet high eye-level above water I can't see the bottom, especially at dawn. So many times I got stopped on sand and had to haul the kayak further or go back upstream, against the current and find another deeper passage.

I have lost already a lot of weight, I'd say about 7-8 kg, perhaps more. My skin's hands is so dry that it sometimes cracks open with tiny blood cells escaping my body. One hand have been completely numb for about a week and the sense in the fingertips of my right hand is gone. Apart from this, I feel tired but great and can't wait to be back on the river. I and the team had to stop 36 hours in Warsaw as we do have a press conference at 11 am which is a unique moment for me talk to the the Poles about what I think of their Queen river -to be kept wild and protected- and tell them to do efforts to not throw waste in it. Also I spend nearly 3 hours at the police to fill in paperwork as my car got stolen with my mountain equipment in it and F*** there was the packraft too. So for the moment I have no idea how I'll get back to Belgium with the rest of the gear and the kayak after reaching Gdansk, but one day at a time.

Pozostało mi ok. 500km do Gdańska.
Chciałbym im przekazać, by o nią dbali, zachowali jej dzikość i chronili przed zanieczyszczeniami.
"Zwiedziłem" też posterunek policji. 3 godz. spisywania raportu o kradzieży mojego auta. Tak, tak.. Skradziono mi auto z moim sprzętem góskim i cholera jasna! ponton też zniknął!!!
The owner Lukasz Krajewski has been our captain since Tarnobrzeg. The boat is comfortable, we're really living in the boat with all the facilities. Lukasz has been training the Poland Trek crew to become real boat people, aware of the changes and life of the river. Lukasz stated that 'Vistula is always very wild and unpredictable, there were a lot of obstacles on our route, although he was expecting even more problems it was not as bad as he thought. He hope he assisted Louis-Philippe well and that he enabled the film crew to make good footage'. He is expecting more adventures as he's guiding us from Warsaw to Plock

Skory do przygód, płynie własnie z nami do Płocka.

We've been using the great Zacuto Crossfire rig, which has been really adaptable and practically on the run, up the mountains and on the river. It's allowed us to really react to situations and also change quickly between film and photography.

In parts it was easier in the kayak as there were hard to see areas of shallow water. We reached Szczucin to dock for the night. One very scary moment when Louis-Philippe paddled too close to a barge at the docks. He could have been pulled under the barrage with the current which would have been fatal. Thankfully danger was averted and Louis-Philippe set up camp in softer ground.

PL: Załoga wspomagająca i filmująca wsiadła na pokład super jachtu dzięki hojności naszego sponsora Żeglugi Wiślanej. I ruszyliśmy w drogę....

First we reach Polaniec where we were greeted by the towns Major who kindly provided locally made, deliciousice-cream. Then we sailed to Baranow Sandomierski which has another castle again met the local major. All this time on the river the back up crew on Vistula cruises haven been assisted by WOPR- the local river services, who guided us through the shallow water. We loved these guys! We docked at Tarnobrzeg for the night.

Day 16- 22nd May
The technical crew stopped briefly at Sandomielrz- an amazingly beautiful. The good flow on the river helped Louis-Philippe. We past beautiful sandy beaches. In the evening we were welcomed with a great BBQ by Victor the owner of the palace in Piotrawiny.

Day 17- 23rd May
Solec - town of Men from wooden ship..replicate of ships that sailed 400 years ago on the visual. Very flat bottom, very shallow…can go on shallow waters.
We're heading Kazimierz Dolny…interview Louphi..joined by filmmaker Michal Barylski. Dock Golab- museum of unconventional bicycle and drinking….

This is the first day that Louis-Philippe changed from the packraft into the Kayak. He started on Goszalkowice lake a large artificial lake. The technical crew were guided by the director of the lake who warned that the area is far more difficult to navigate and cross then it appears. He quoted a time when a large film crew refused help on the river, not even taking life jackets. Their boat capsized and although luckily no one was hurt they lost hundreds of thousands worth of equipment.
There is a huge dam at the end of the lake so we had to transport the kayak a few kilometres to rejoin the river proper
Day 12 18th May 2012
We had a press conference in Krakow. Louis-Philippe had kayaked up to 30 km before Krakow so the crew took him there and back by car. It was slow going for Louis-Philippe because there were a few locks and hardly any current to help him along.
Louis-Philippe rose at 4am to start the ascent of Barania Gora. Bartek the owner and guide of the mountain outpost (along with Tomasz and the film crew) met Louis-Philippe at the summit. Bartek arranged for Louis-Philippe to find the real source of the Vistula River called the black source. This point is not usually shown to visitors but as Louis-Philippe's whole journey is to document the life of the river he was granted special permission.

They set out from shelter to make their way down to meet the Poland Trek crew. The trails were surprisingly difficult and confusing. They were told by locals that unfortunately the forestry workers sometimes accidentally cut down trees which previously had trail signs on so it was quite common for local hikers to find themselves lost. Finally found the right road and met a group of villagers who gave their own local advice on how to deal with Louis-Philippe's blisters. At this point his feet were in a pretty bad state and he had to cut off some of his blisters to be able to continue walking.
The plan was for Louis-Philippe to meet with Tomasz at Babia Gora at the bottom of Beskid Zywiecki. Originally they were due to meet at 12 noon, which became 3pm, then 6pm then 9pm. Tomasz was getting concerned for Louis-Philippe's safety as he knew he didn't have full head torch battery power. At around 10.30pm Tomasz received a call from a Polish local who explained that Louis-Philippe arrived at his place lost and asking directions. The local helped Tomasz and Louis-Philippe reunite. Louis-Philippe at this point was exhausted and had bad sunburn on his calves as had made a slight mistake dressing in short pants that morning rather than long trousers. He also had a nasty rash on his ankles which was adding to the problem.
Day 6 -12th May 2012
With the exhaustion and the foot pain they had to start out five hours later than normal at 11am. They started the climb to Babia Gora (approx 1700km). At first the weather was with them in the lowlands but as soon as they climbed higher it poured with rain. They reached the top, but it was totally foggy. They found shelter early and after some confusion met with with one of Poland Trek's filmmaker and Photographer Bartlomiej Ryzy. Made a big fire to finally get warm.
Next day they walked to the valley of the 5 Polish lakes, planning to climb to the highest and longest ridge which is very rocky. They met a young guy who was planning an alternate route to the summit. He said to Louis-Philippe and Tomasz that he would check in with the local mountain rescue service regarding the conditions. A little while later he rushed back to where the guys were to tell them that the advice was not to attempt the summit as was very dangerous, covered in snow but with strong sunshine producing deadly conditions as could loose footing and slip a long way down.

Louis-Philippe and Tomasz decided to respect this advice and circumvent the summit. This though meant adding a lot of extra kilometres to the journey, at least another 20 km.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6545580554532807849.post-20394385068182906792012-05-15T20:06:00.000+02:002012-05-16T02:38:37.333+02:00Poland Trek - the full story so far...Day 1

Louis-Philippe Loncke and Tomasz Grzywaczewski (Poland Trek co-organiser and promoter), who are both experienced adventurers and climbers would send this message to travellers to the region.

PL: Tatr nigdy nie należy lekceważyć. Takie przesłanie mają dla odwiedzających te regiony Louis-Philippe Loncke i Tomasz Grzywaczewski (Poland Trek współorganizator i promotor), doświadczeni podróżnicy i wspinacze górscy.

Although the rest of Poland was basking in Spring weather, up on the path to the highest summit of the Tatras mountains - Rysy - the weather was extreme and dangerous. They encountered a blizzard, with very poor visibility. At first they were climbing with other crews but at the very steep path between ridges, the other crews headed back down. In this mountain corridor 2 metres of snow lay. They had to walk with crampons, with Tomasz having one ice pick. They had to go extremely carefully, making small, precise footprints in the snow. As it would be very easy to slip and fall at least 300 metres. Two climbers, two weeks ago unfortunately lost their lives at a similar point.

Again, Louis-Philippe and Tomasz would reiterate the respect people should have for the Tatras mountains.
They finally reached the summit at around 5pm, exhausted. They left at dusk and had to continue their journey in darkness. Finally they made camp at a shelter at 10pm. Louis-Philippe stated that this was one of the five most difficult and exhausting days in explorers career.

Louis-Philippe is making progress, though the harsh sun has been making it difficult and he has sunburn on his lower legs. But on waking this morning the burns did not seem too bad so on his goes. I meet up with him Saturday night, and then can hopefully get more information and post some pictures from what turned out to be a very challenging start to the Trek.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6545580554532807849.post-23700899045072371842012-05-09T23:37:00.003+02:002012-05-11T09:50:17.510+02:00Day 3 - Part two- Sun and blisters

Update from Louis-Philippe in the mountains

They walked 14 hours today, still slightly behind schedule but they are continuing to catch up time. Currently around 79 km from Barania Gora.

The sun has been a problem today causing some sun damage and they are suffering blisters on their feet.

The snow line is low down the mountain so 50% of the time they are walking on thick snow so the proper snow shoes they have with them have been essential....

Odpowiednie buty to w tych warunkach konieczność...
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1
